For investors and plant managers, understanding how to diagnose and fix cutting defects is essential for maintaining high Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and reducing “broke” (industrial waste).

Below is a technical troubleshooting guide for the most common quality defects encountered during the tissue cutting stage.

1. Fuzzy or Ragged Edges (Dusting)

One of the most frequent complaints is a “hairy” or fuzzy appearance on the roll edges. This not only looks unprofessional but also creates excessive paper dust that can clog packaging machinery.

  • The Cause: Typically, this is due to a dull blade. When the edge loses its razor-sharpness, it begins to “tear” the fibers rather than slicing them. In slitter rewinders, this can also be caused by an incorrect shear angle or insufficient overlap between the top and bottom blades.
  • The Solution: * Log Saws: Increase the frequency of the automatic grinding cycle.
    • Band Saws: Replace the band. Check the blade-cleaning brushes to ensure they are removing debris that can cause friction.

  • The Cause: This is a classic sign of mechanical over-pressure. Either the clamping system is too aggressive, or the blade is so dull that it requires excessive “downfeed” force to penetrate the paper, physically squashing the log before it cuts.
  • The Solution: * Ensure the blade is sharp enough to cut with minimal resistance.
    • Verify the Log Accumulator timing; if a log is fed before the previous one has cleared, it can cause a physical jam that deforms the product.

4. Variations in Roll Width

Inconsistent roll widths (e.g., one roll is 10cm, the next is 10.2cm) lead to significant problems in multipack bagging.

  • The Cause: This is usually an automation or sensor error. In electronic log saws, the servo-motor responsible for advancing the log may be slipping or losing its “home” position. In manual band saws, it is almost always due to human error or a loose mechanical stop.
