5 Common Folding Methods Used in Cotton Tissue Folding Machines

As the cotton tissue market continues to grow, manufacturers are developing products for different usage scenarios, from personal facial cleansing to travel packs and household applications. Besides the material itself, the folding method plays an important role in determining product appearance, dispensing performance, user experience, and even packaging design.

Modern cotton tissue folding machines are capable of producing several folding styles. Each folding method has its own advantages and is suitable for different market needs. Understanding these options can help manufacturers select the most appropriate solution for their products.

Interfolded Folding (V Fold and N Fold)

Interfolded folding is currently the most popular folding method used in cotton tissue production. In this design, each sheet is mechanically interlocked with the next one during the folding process. When a user pulls out one sheet, the following sheet is automatically brought into position, creating a convenient pop-up dispensing effect.

The two most common interfolded formats are V Fold and N Fold. Both provide smooth dispensing and a good consumer experience, while N Fold generally offers a larger unfolded sheet size and thicker folding height, and is often used for premium products.

The biggest advantage of interfolded folding is convenience. Consumers can easily remove tissues one by one without searching for the next sheet. For this reason, interfolded products are widely used for facial cotton tissues, baby cotton tissues, and various household dry wipes. If a brand wants to provide a user-friendly dispensing experience, interfolded folding is usually the first choice.

Perforated Continuous Folding (V Fold and N Fold)

Another common solution is perforated continuous folding. Unlike interfolded products, the sheets are not mechanically interlocked. Instead, adjacent sheets are connected by perforation lines.

In practice, the finished product is essentially a continuously folded web with perforated connections between sheets. When a consumer pulls one sheet, the perforation separates and simultaneously positions the next sheet for dispensing.

From the user’s perspective, perforated products can still achieve a continuous dispensing effect similar to interfolded products. However, the working principle is different. Because the product remains a continuous folded strip during production, this design can offer stable operation and is often preferred for certain product types and production requirements.

Perforated V Fold and Perforated N Fold are both available depending on the desired product format and packaging style.

Non-Interfolded Single-Sheet V Fold

In recent years, some manufacturers have started to adopt a non-interfolded V Fold design, especially for products that emphasize hygiene.

In this folding method, all sheets are folded in the same direction and stacked individually. There is no interlocking structure and no perforated connection between sheets. Each sheet remains completely independent from the others.

As a result, pulling out one sheet will not automatically bring out the next one. Users need to take each sheet separately.

Although this may seem less convenient compared with pop-up dispensing, many consumers and brands view it as a more hygienic solution because the next sheet remains inside the package until it is intentionally removed. This design is becoming increasingly popular in premium facial cotton tissues and products marketed with a strong focus on cleanliness and personal care.

Multi-Fold Formats: 1/4 Fold, 1/6 Fold and 1/8 Fold

Besides V Fold and N Fold products, cotton tissue machines can also produce multi-fold formats such as 1/4 Fold, 1/6 Fold, and 1/8 Fold.

These products are created through a combination of longitudinal and cross folding, resulting in a much smaller final folded size.

Compared with standard V Fold products, multi-fold tissues offer several advantages:

  • Smaller package dimensions
  • Better portability
  • Convenient storage in handbags or pockets
  • Suitable for travel and outdoor use

Because of their compact size, these formats are commonly used for travel packs, pocket tissues, handkerchief-style cotton tissues, and promotional products. They are especially popular in markets where portability is an important selling point.

Which Folding Method is Best?

There is no single folding method that is suitable for every product. The ideal choice depends on the target market, product positioning, packaging style, and consumer preferences.

If convenience and smooth dispensing are the highest priorities, interfolded V Fold or N Fold is usually the best option. If continuous dispensing is required but a perforated web structure is preferred, perforated folding may be the right solution. For brands focusing on hygiene and individual sheet separation, non-interfolded V Fold offers clear advantages. Meanwhile, manufacturers targeting travel and portable products often choose 1/4 Fold, 1/6 Fold, or 1/8 Fold formats.
